Our Journey - Build a Better Booth Campaign
In 2010, the Heidelberg Recreation Association began their quest to have a new facility built for the Heidelberg Park due to the number of deficiencies in the original structure. It lacked the modern conveniences of today and was inaccessible for those in wheelchairs. Our proposal was accepted by the Township of Woolwich and the task of fundraising began. In 2014, the Township of Woolwich condemned the booth after significant structural damage was detected. As the park and its booth were used for the delivery of events to build and strengthen community relationships, the need for a new booth became even more important. Annual activities such as the fall and winter family fun days, skating parties, Woolwich/Wellesley Challenges, Canada Day festivities and park clean up days in the spring and fall ceased to happen upon this decision which put the pressure on to get a new facility erected as soon as possible.
Since then, the Heidelberg Recreation Association has been working tirelessly to find the funds to meet their requirements for the construction to happen. Donations of both inkind services and monetary were solicited through phone calls, letters and community contacts. Community events such as a "Buy a Brick" Social, an auction night, and a paint night were held to assist with this challenge of raising the money needed for our portion of the total cost.
Thanks to the financial support from the Township of Woolwich, the Kitchener and Waterloo Community Foundation (KWCF), an Ontario Trillium Foundation grant of $150 000, and the monetary and in kind donations from many businesses and residents, the dream of a new building came to fruition in the spring of 2017. To celebrate this huge accomplishment, the Heidelberg Recreation Association alongside the Township of Woolwich is hosted a Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, September 9, 2017.
